BOND 23 is shaping up to be a horse of a different color relative to the franchise's history. First, we heard that Sam Mendes was attached to direct James Bond's continuing foray into the depths of the international criminal organization-- Quantum. Now, Cinemablend is reporting that Rachel Weisz is possibly playing the new leader of Quantum in the 23rd film. More information, after the jump.

MGM is under some financial constraints, though this project looks to be moving forward despite the dollar crunching. And in MGM's eyes, moving forward means casting one of cinema's most talented actresses in their film. Weisz is definitely one of my favorite actresses currently working. Her work in THE FOUNTAIN helped to make that one of my favorite films of 2006 and her performance in Rian Johnson's THE BROTHERS BLOOM added a dynamic character to a film already filled with depth.

Giving Weisz another role in a great action franchise, following up her work in THE MUMMY franchise, makes me genuinely excited for this project. It's not only got an Academy Award winning director behind it, and possibly a fantastic actress whose talent alone will make Quantum a legitimate villain in the next film.

This rumor seems to have some weight to it. Weisz is working alongside Daniel Craig in Jim Sheridan's next film, DREAM HOUSE. This connection with Bond's leading man makes me think that this news could actually be true. If so, you can file this piece of news under, "Officially Cool."
