Well Damn: WB holding off on Mel Gibson’s new epic; script issues at fault

Dammit. Say what you will about Mel Gibson as a man and human being, but the guy can flat out direct the hell out of a motion picture. However, it appears as though even he can’t get over a poor script.

According to The Wrap, WB is holding off on starting up his next film, an epic penned by Joe Eszterhas which would follow the story of Maccabee, “whose victory over Greek and Syrian armies is celebrated at Hanukkah.” Maccabee led a revolt against the Greeks in the 2nd Century BC, and was set to be the focus on this project, until WB bailed due to the lack of “a sense of triumph.”

Personally, as a huge fan of Gibson as a filmmaker, I can see why groups of people would be pensive when it would come to him taking on this type of story, but honestly, it’s Eszterhas’ involvement that gave this writer pause. Best known for a film like BASIC INSTINCT, this is quite a change of pace for the writer, and one that I’m not sure would fit him all that well. Knowing that even Gibson himself was “disappointed” with the draft, says a ton.
