What exactly was that changed ending for SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD, and what could it have been?
Spoilers ahead. No witty lead here, just a warning, that spoilers for SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD be ahead.
It goes without saying that, in the months prior to the Edgar Wright-directed adaptation of the hit graphic novel series, the ending was retooled a little bit. Well, now we finally may know what that ending would have been, both if Wright decided to keep to his original cut, and one special ending, that would have left fans abuzz.
According to The Playlist, at a preview screening earlier this year, the director discussed the possibility of keeping his original ending, which saw our heroic lead end up with his original squeeze, Knives. Now, while this ending would have definitely been quite a departure from the ending that we got (and one that I think would have worked better), but it's Wright's "joke" ending that has me wanting to see it actually made.
The outlet also reports that Wright had and idea that would have seen the film end with Pilgrim realizing it was all just a dream, and that he had indeed killed seven people. This twist was originally going to be shot, only as a joke, but apparently, time wasn’t on Wright’s side, so the extra scenes were never put to film.
Personally, while I hate the “dream” ending, I love this idea. Sure, it’s a total gimmick ending, but I think it would have been perfect for the film. Yes, the tone would have definitely been quite different, but for a film that knows exactly what it is, to play with that convention, would have been really interesting. That said, I wouldn’t change anything in Scott Pilgrim for the world.
