Who thinks Donald Glover would be right for Spider-Man? Stan Lee, that’s who!
So, you’ve heard what many online film pundits think about the idea of Donald Glover being cast as Spider-Man, you’ve even heard my humble opinion on the matter, but what about the man behind the web-slinger himself, the character’s co-creator, Stan Lee?
Well, sitting down with MTV, “The Man” not only knows all about the debate, but it looks like he’s quite interested in the idea:
“"He's a great actor. I've seen him, and he's terrific. A lot of [my Twitter followers] have been saying that he ought to have a chance to audition for the role, so I tweeted back by saying, as far as I'm concerned, anybody should have a chance to audition for the role. I certainly think he should have a chance to audition…And I didn't mention this in my tweet, but I'm telling you that I don't ever want to make it sound like I'm trying in any way to influence the Marvel people as to who to cast in any roles, that isn't my job. It isn't in my purview. It's something I should butt out of and I try to butt out of it — just like I don't tell them what to do with the movie."
While he definitely doesn’t have much to say in who Sony and Columbia do or don’t pick for the role, it is nice to see that the creator of the character itself is behind the choice, and even goes as far as to support it by saying that the casting of Spidey shouldn’t be a “racial issue.” That’s as far as I think the discussion should really go.
To me, the casting of the character, as I said in the recent editorial, should be based solely on the choice of who is or isn’t right. The character isn’t black, or any race, sex, creed, sexual orientation, or anything like that, the character is inherently a geek. That is what he is at the very core. Geekdom spans any of those things, so it comes down to who is or isn’t right acting-wise for the role.
What do you think?
