Will Amanda Seyfried be Hardwicke’s THE GIRL WITH THE RED RIDING HOOD?

I’ve never shied from voicing my distaste for most of director Catherine Hardwicke’s filmography (from the overblown THIRTEEN, to the fundamentally weak TWILIGHT, and even the promise of her head-scratchingly unnecessary HAMLET take), but it looks like she just might have something interesting on her plate.

It looks as if Hardwicke is trying to get back in the vaguely goth-y teen game with a modern day take on the Brothers Grimm classic story of Little Red Riding Hood. Warner Bros. (along with Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company, Appian Way) is currently developing the project, titled THE GIRL WITH THE RED RIDING HOOD. Warner is apparently looking at a smallish pool of potential leading ladies, including Amanda Seyfried, whose DEAR JOHN is currently in theaters, with the upcoming LETTERS TO JULIET to look forward to.

Back in December, Warner and Hardwicke entered a “holding deal,” which is essentially “an arrangement in which the director and studio commit to each other exclusively for a set period of time.” It’s sort of like going steady. The holding deal is coming to an end this month, and it appears that RIDING HOOD will be the ultimate result of the partnership.

The latest version of the script has been penned by David Johnson (ORPHAN), and has been getting a positive reception from those who have already read it. The film will focus on the darker sides of the tale, surely with some sort of romantic twist.

Truthfully, the potential of Seyfried’s involvement in the project is what’s most interesting to me, not Hardwicke’s direction. Would you like to see Seyfried taking on this type of role?
