Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg in THE OTHER GUYS trailer
Where would we be without a good buddy cop comedy? And now the genre is getting the Ferrell treatment. Co-written by Will Ferrel and Adam McKay (who also directed the film), THE OTHER GUYS stars Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell as a rather unlikely crime-fighting duo. The movie also features Eva Mendes, Michael Keaton, Steve Coogan, Ray Stevenson, Samuel L. Jackson, and Dwayne (you'll always be The Rock) Johnson.
What you see in the trailer is standard Will Ferrell, which is not necessarily a bad thing. I'll be interested to see how well Wahlberg plays off Ferrell as he is not really known for his comedic chops or timing. Samuel L. Jackson and Dwyane Johnson seem to do a good job being the suave cops they are supposed to be as those aren't too far away from their standard roles as well.
What I like about the trailer is that you get an idea of the type of humor they are going for, which seems to rely on self reference, and the mocking of staples of the buddy cop movie. For example, all the property damage that occurs and the use of good cop bad cop. I especially like anytime Ferrell's character's loses it and breaks out into that high pitched scream that he does so well.
There aren't too many laughs to be had from the trailer, but this does look to have quite a bit of potential. The supporting cast with the likes of Steve Coogan and Michael Keaton gives me high hopes as well. Watch the trailer below.
THE OTHER GUYS follows Detective Allen Gamble (Will Ferrell), a forensic accountant who's more interested in paperwork than hitting the streets, and Detective Terry Hoitz (Mark Wahlberg), a tough guy who has been stuck with Allen as his partner ever since an unfortunate run-in with Derek Jeter. Allen and Terry idolize the city's top cops, Danson and Highsmith (Dwayne Johnson and Samuel L. Jackson), but when an opportunity arises for the other guys to step up, things don't quite go as planned.
THE OTHER GUYS hits theaters on August 6, 2010.
