The 63rd annual Cannes Film Festival has its winners. Now I'm sure many of us who weren't able to attend the very prestigious film festival will spend the rest of the year trying to watch these lucky films, as winning at the fest is quite the big deal.

The jury was headed by Tim Burton. Tim and the gang gave the highest award, the Palme d'Or, to the Thai film, UNCLE BOONMEE WHO CAN RECALL HIS PAST LIVES, which deals with, "A man suffering from acute kidney failure who spends his last days in the country surrounded by his family." I have obviously not seen the film but I definitely love that director Apichatpong Weerasethakul's acceptance speech contained this line: "I'd like to thank the jury, particularly Tim Burton, whose haircut I really like."

The Grand Prize went to OF GODS AND MEN depicting "Christian monks living in a monastery in Algeria as terror mounts around them," and the Jury Prize went to a film from Chad, A SCREAMING MAN.

Mathieu Amalric won the Best Director award for ON TOUR. Amalric played Bond's main villain in QUANTUM OF SOLACE, as well as the main character in THE DIVING BELL AND BUTTERFLY, which Julian Schnabel won the Best Director award for at Cannes three years ago. The winner of the Best Screenplay award was Lee Chang-dong for POETRY. The Best Actor award was split between Javier Bardem for BIUTIFUL and Elio Germano for OUR LIFE. Juliette Binoche won best actress for CERTIFIED COPY.

Now, I (and probably you) have the mission of trying catch these film as they get released, if you weren't already interested or aware of them prior the fest.
