Worried about Andrew Garfield’s geek factor? Did you forget about Spike Jonze’s I’M HERE?

Now that we’ve all settled into the announcement that Andrew Garfield is our new Spider-Man, we can begin the endless debates as to whether or not the thesp is suited for the role. I’ve already fielded numerous text messages from fanboy friends (“he is too tall!”) and I suspect the chatter about how he’s “too old” to play a teenage Peter Parker will go on for quite some time. But what about Garfield’s geek factor? The handsome actor may look dreamboat-y, but I assure you, he’s got the nerd chops to make this thing happen. The man played a robot, for goodness sakes.

If you’ve forgotten the first month of this year, I don’t blame you, but it did bring us a hint as to who Garfield can inhabit in even the most constricted of roles. In Spike Jonze’s short film, I’M HERE, Garfield was Sheldon, the robot at the center of a touching and tragic love story. The film premiered at Sundance and pulled enough geeky heartstrings to keep Jonze in business for awhile. In March, the film finally hit the interwebs via a sponsoring website created by Absolut Vodka. The short is still not available via the usual suspects – YouTube and Vimeo searches only turn up trailers, but the Absolut site is still showing the film in its kitschy, faux-theater funhouse way.

If you still haven’t watched I’M HERE, swing on over to its official site HERE, and check out Garfield in geeky, robotic glory. Does this ease your concerns at all?
