Writers Guild announces award nominees; some definite shockers among them

A while back, the Writers Guild of America found some poor headlines when they disqualified the screenplays for such beloved films as ANOTHER YEAR, BIUTIFUL, BLUE VALENTINE, and THE KING’S SPEECH from their awards consideration.

Well, we now have the nominees for the WGA’s upcoming awards ceremony, and these vacancies have apparently made room for some shocking additions.

The two most interesting additions here are the indie films PLEASE GIVE and I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS, both have had a relatively minute awards season. I haven’t seen the latter, but I can say that if there is one thing that saves the otherwise underwhelming PLEASE GIVE, it’s its rather remarkable screenplay.

However, that’s about where the interesting nominations stop, because you otherwise have your standard 2010 awards fare here. INCEPTION, THE FIGHTER, TRUE GRIT, 127 HOURS, THE SOCIAL NETWORK, and THE TOWN all get nominations here. THE TOWN, coming off its recent Producer’s Guild nomination, continues gaining momentum, and looks like an absolute lock for an Oscar nod come later this month.

Here is the full list of nominees:
