You better watch out, Don Cheadle is a WAR MACHINE

Don Cheadle did not play Colonel James "Rhodey" Rhodes in the original IRON MAN film. However, he is taking the part that was not originally his and is making it his own. Cheadle, who took over the part of Rhodes from Terrence Howard in IRON MAN 2 (which included the character's transformation into his alter ego, War Machine), has claimed a script is in the works for a spin off film about the character, titled WAR MACHINE. Read what Cheadle had to say about the project after the break.

Cheadle remarked, "They're developing [WAR MACHINE] now, they're working on that....I think they've hired a writer, so we'll see how it goes. It would be a lot of fun."

Cheadle also pretty much laid to rest any speculation that War Machine would appear in THE AVENGERS film, saying, "I don't think he shows up......I think he's kind of a lone wolf."

Even if War Machine does not make an appearance in THE AVENGERS, he will have two movies remaining on his plate, WAR MACHINE and IRON MAN 3. IRON MAN 3, which is scheduled for a 2013 release, will not have John Favreau at the helm. Favreau, who directed the first two IRON MAN films, announced his departure from the franchise in December. Cheadle commented on the loss of Favreau by saying:

"People move on for various reasons, and Jon's very busy. He's going to do COWBOYS AND ALIENS, and he has a ton of other projects on his slate, so he's fine. I don't actually know what happened. I'm kind of out of that loop."

Cheadle's career has been on the up and up for the last decade. Meanwhile, the big loser in all of this seems to be Terrence Howard. Howard was having a golden run with films such as CRASH, HUSTLE AND FLOW, THE BRAVE ONE, and IRON MAN, but ever since he did not return to reprise his IRON MAN role, he has not struck that kind of gold again. Now he has joined the cast of Law & Order: Los Angeles. It probably would have been nicer to have two more IRON MAN movies and WAR MACHINE on his resume.

So I’m guessing WM will be part of the 2nd Marvel wave, starting right after The Avengers, right? Depending on the success of Thor and Cap, obviously..

This is my first comment here, by the way ; )

From what I remember, which very well could be wrong, Terrence Howard asked for more money anticipating the possibility of IRON MAN 3 and WAR MACHINE. Instead of discussing it, Marvel went behind his back and hired Cheadle. So yea, I’d say Howard is probably upset with himself (and Marvel) about his current prospects.
