Over at Vulture, reports are in that Zoe Saldana is in negotiations to star opposite Mark Ruffalo in Maya Forbes' directorial debut, INFINITELY POLAR BEAR. Screenwriter Forbes, who is best known for her scripts for such varied fare as MONSTERS VS. ALIENS and television series The Larry Sanders Show, is aiming to shoot in September.

The film is a martial drama that would see Saldana playing the "put-upon wife" of Ruffalo's character, a bipolar man who suffers some serious consequences after going off his meds. After Ruffalo's both personal and professional life spirals out of control, Saldana's character leaves him, and he's tasked with running the household and the lives of their kids. I think Ruffalo is a tremendously talented actor, and I'd love to see Saldana in a meaty, emotional role, so this pairing sounds good to me.

INFINITELY POLAR BEAR not only has an interesting plot, but an interesting pedigree as well. J.J. Abrams will produce it, along with Megan Ellison, who has recently won the hearts of cinephiles everywhere by helping to finance P.T. Anderson's THE MASTER and INHERENT VICE. There is no official word on which studio will take on the project, but Paramount is a good bet, thanks to the strong ties both Ellison and Abrams have to the studio.

Vulture also notes that Saldana is planning to follow INFINITELY's shoot with the STAR TREK sequel in November. There's still no official word on if Abrams will direct this entry into his rebooted franchise, but as an unabashed fan of the first, I can only hope the band gets back together for this one.
