ZOMBIELAND takes a bite out of MEATBALLS and TOYs alike
The mighty MEATBALL tower has fallen. After two (somewhat) inexplicable weeks at number one, CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS has ceded the throne to the bitingly hilarious ZOMBIELAND. Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg shot, batted, and banjoed their way to the top, pulling in $25 million in the film's opening weekend. The zombies had a budget of only $23.6 million, so things are looking bloody good, let's all pray together for a sequel. Those weather-challenged MEATBALLS served up second at the box office, making $16.7 million, forking over more than $83 million in total returns. With a budget of $100 million, we'll be seeing a square meal of breaking even as early as next week.
The rest of the week's openers pulled in a real mixed bag. Disney's TOY STORY / TOY STORY 2 double feature (in 3D!) made an easy $12.5 million in third place. Y'all have one more week to take it in, so get on over to the theater while you can. Little can top the charm of TOY STORY for me. Ricky Gervais' THE INVENTION OF LYING truly made just over $7.3 million to make fourth place. Honest. I swear! (I'll stop.) I'd be surprised if we don't see it plummet down through the top ten in the next week. Drew Barrymore's directorial debut, WHIP IT, only skated in to sixth place. The film made just over $4.8 million and, with a budget of $15 million and an Ellen Page-starring push, I'd say that's a pretty big disappointment. I'm still on Team Hurl Scouts, though.
The rest of your Weekend Top Ten O' Fun! SURROGATES came in fifth with $7.34 million, CAPITALISM: A LOVE STORY took seventh place with $$.85 million, FAME danced into eighth place with $4.75 million, THE INFORMANT! dropped to ninth place to make $3.8 million, and LOVE HAPPENS hung on with tenth place and over $2.7 million.
Be sure to shoot on over to the reviews section to see what we thought of ZOMBIELAND, THE INVENTION OF LYING, and WHIP IT. And, well, everything else! What did you guys see this weekend?
